Background on this item -
With the first performance of his jazz opera Porgy and Bess in New York in 1935, George Gershwin left the stony path of that of a poorly paid song writer to become one of America’s most triumphant composers. The unwavering success of his stage work (which is exclusively performed by a black ensemble) is surely due to its unique mixture of styles which combine so-called “classical”, symphonic music with popular jazz music. This complete recording from 1975 is just as exclusive and rare as a production of the opera outside the USA, and it certainly puts all other recordings – highlights and soundtracks alike – in the dark. Set in a run-down area on the Charleston waterfront in South Carolina, Lorin Maazel brings out the electrifying drama of the work in this masterly performance with its brilliant sound. And at last the evergreens such as Summertime, It ain’t necessarily so and Buzzard Song can be heard and enjoyed to the full in their proper context.

This 3-LP box is an absolute must. After the unanimous praise from the international press, DECCA can justifiably be proud of their recording, and we too are proud to present once again in vinyl this milestone in American music history.

1976: Decca Records: The first complete recording of the opera based on Gershwin's original score, restoring the material cut by Gershwin during rehearsals for the New York premiere in 1935, was made by the Cleveland Orchestra under Lorin Maazel in 1976 for Decca Records in the UK and London Records in the U.S., in time for the U.S. Bicentennial. It starred Willard White singing his first Porgy, and Leona Mitchell as Bess. The recording was praised by critics for its performance quality and racial significance, but at the same time was highly criticized by some for not bringing out the "jazzier" qualities of the score.
